Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) Systems

MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) Systems

Non-Clogging, Self-Cleaning Biofilm Technology for High Organic Loads

Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) processes deploy specially engineered virgin HDPE carriers that circulate freely throughout the aeration basin. Protected biofilm grows on the extensive active surface area of each carrier, digesting dissolved organic carbon (BOD/COD) and converting ammonia to nitrate (nitrification) with remarkable stability.

Because the biomass is attached rather than suspended, MBBR tanks do not require return activated sludge (RAS) lines and remain immune to hydraulic shock loads and toxic peaks.

Advantages & Features

  • 500 - 1200 m²/m³ high specific surface area virgin HDPE biocarrier media
  • Allows existing treatment plants to double or triple capacity without civil construction
  • Self-cleaning hydrodynamic carrier motion with zero backwash requirement
  • Exceptional biological resilience against organic shock loads and flow fluctuations
  • No return activated sludge (RAS) recycling loop needed, lowering pumping energy
  • Superior nitrification and denitrification efficiency for stringent nitrogen limits
